Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Mr H W G Elwes, visited Mythe Water Treatment Works to view the protective perimeter wall around the site, provided by Hesco Bastion Ltd at the end of July..
Commenting on his visit, Mr Elwes said, “Gloucestershire was well served by Hesco Bastion Ltd in the emergency and the installation was impressive.”
The defences, which are around one kilometre in length and 1.37m high, took just 27 hours to erect when rising waters threatened to flood the site for a second time.
Following the visit, Jake McQueen, product manager at Hesco, said “We were delighted to welcome the Lord-Lieutenant to view the defences and show him the results of the hard work put in by Severn Trent, Interserve and the Armed Forces in July. I am very pleased with the condition of the wall, which continues to provide robust protection against the threat of flooding.”
Hesco Bastion’s unique Concertainer® system, which is also in use at nearby Walham and Castle Meads substations, has been exported to countries all over the world – not least the United States where it was used in New Orleans to boost levee defences in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
This is the first time that the product has been used on such a large scale in the UK. However, it is now anticipated that other areas at risk will benefit from this technology when faced with the unprecedented levels of flooding that we have recently experienced at first hand in Gloucestershire.
