FPED (Force Protection Equipment Demonstration)
26th -28th April, Quantico Marine Corps Base, Virginia

HESCO Bastion attended the 5th bi-annual FPED exhibition last month. Held at Quantico Marine Corps Base just south of Washington DC. This invite only event is host to the lastest in Force Protection Equipment.

Fresh from the Spadeadam trial HESCO Bastion was keen to demonstrate the new EOPS system. An EOPS bunker was constructed on the base's Control Demo firing range and trialed in front of visitors each of the 3 days the exhibition was held.

A brand new exhibition stand was developed for this largely outdoor show, incorporating the highly popular bar theme covered with 2 large open tent structures. Despite the huge demand for a cold beer, the Marine base rules prevented the stand from serving anything other than coffee and refreshments. Which were served on the house, of course.

The weather held out and the show went extremely well, with the relaxed HESCO bar area proving a popular pit stop for Marines, Engineers and even other vendors all of whom expressed how impressed they were by the HESCO stand.

Around 5000 visitors attended, with more than 500 companies showcasing over 2000 of the latest defence equipment and technologies.

Extended Overhead Protection Systems (EOPS) Trial Spadeadam

13th -15th April, Spadeadam, UK

The new EOPS system was successfully tested by Advantica over 3 days in mid April at their Spadeadam Test Site, a major testing facility in the UK.

QinetiQ designed EOPS using structural engineering analysis and evidence from past testing on munitions systems against HESCO Concertainer. The system was designed to withstand an attack from an 81mm mortar bomb, typical of the size being used in Iraq. However, as expected by both QinetiQ and HESCO Bastion it will provide protection against much larger charge sizes.

The testing involved the use of C4 Explosives contained within a steel case 3-5mm thick.  All charges were placed in contact with the roof to simulate an attack by cased munitions fitted with a super-quick fuse.

Part of the testing was viewed by various invited guests from a number of countries and organizations. Delegates were able to see 2 cased charges of C4 being fired, one of 10kg and the other of 15kg. Both of these shots had no effect on the integrity of the structure less a crater in the sand cover on the roof.

For further information on EOPS, or any other Concertainer® products, call or email HESCO Bastion at the address on the Contact Us page.

Harley Davidson Presentation

7th April, Hilo, Hawaii

Last Month saw the long awaited presentation of our Harley Davidson Fat Boy motorcycle to winner of the 2004 HESCO Photo Competition, SSG Thomas Kualii of 193rd Aviation, C Company.

His return home from deployment in Iraq back to Hilo, Hawaii in April 2005 allowed us to make the presentation to SSG Kualii of his Brand new Fatboy.
The ceremony which took place on the 7th April at the Hilo Harley-Davidson Dealership, was attended by Mr Kualli’s family and friends.

When asked about finally receiving this fantastic prize Mr Kualii said “This is Fantastic, I never thought, whilst back in Iraq, that I would be coming back to something like this! Mahalo - Thank you”

We would like to thank the Hilo Harley Dealership and Ellsworth Fontes who helped organize and stage this event.

A big thank you goes out to all who entered our competition, and we’re sorry if you didn’t win this time round. However, keep an eye out for some stunning new competitions in the near future.
