HESCO Bastion Supporting Extreme Endurance and Teamwork
Sept/Oct 2005, Satopanth, Himalayas

With the full backing and support of Hesco Bastion, the Royal Engineers Mountaineering and Exploration Club (REMEC) undertook an arduous and eventful climbing expedition to climb Satopanth in the Indian Garwhal Himalaya.

Satopanth at just over 7,000metres is a magnificent Himalayan mountain and was an expedition of formidable undertaking. The route included a complex glacier approach, high angled snow slopes and knife edge ridge before the final ascent to the summit.

The climb provided a fantastic opportunity to introduce soldiers with some previous mountaineering knowledge to high altitudes plus also a limited number of relative novices and introduce them to expedition mountaineering.

HESCO Bastion fully supports RERFC in all their endeavors and wishes them encouragement and motivation for a successful and spirited season ahead.

The journey began through the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, north to Uttarachal and the Himalayas where the journey on foot commenced at just over 3000metres at Gangotri. The expedition continued up until 5100metres on the Chaturangi Glacier where the group had their first breathtaking sighting of Satopanth.

From this point on, the route became increasingly treacherous and the weather unsettled with heavy snow and poor visibility. With continuing deterioration in the conditions, the avalanche risk became unacceptably high to attempt the final summit which with great sadness meant the group had to formally abandon their attempt on the mountain.

Despite having not reached the summit, the expedition was enormously inspiring, exhilarating and rewarding and HESCO Bastion would like to offer their respect and admiration to all those that took part in planning and undertaking the trip and also their encouragement for the next summit expedition to Mount McKinley in Alaska in 2007.

Tasks which require extreme physical and mental exertion, unflagging endurance and exemplary teamwork are projects which HESCO Bastion are honoured to provide their full support and backing to. HESCO are therefore extremely proud to be sponsoring Commando Joe. Commando Joe are a military trans-Atlantic rowing team on an epic 3,318 mile journey across the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Falmouth with a 110-year old record in their sights. Commando Joe is rowing the Atlantic Ocean to raise at least £100,000 for the continued work of the Meningitis Trust.
